Car insurance advice for Continental driving
Posted :15-07-2005
Motorists have been warned that they may not be covered by their car insurance this summer in the instance of having an accident while driving on the Continent.
Although all drivers are automatically covered for third party fire and theft, under their insurance, when driving in the European Union (EU) even comprehensive car insurance policies may not provide protection for an accident.
Motorists are advised to inform their insurance broker before departing on a trip overseas as some may need to upgrade the foreign cover in their premiums.
The risk of having an accident is heightened when driving on the Continent, with the unfamiliar surroundings, foreign road signs and having to drive on the other side of the road, contributing to this trend.
This Is Money reports that motorists are also at an increased risk of theft when abroad. Cars with foreign number plates are often targeted by the thieves who are in the search of valuables and other expensive items, such as cameras.
Motorists are also advised to take their full driving license with them when heading to the Continent.
