Quarter of a million not insured for EU travel
Posted :22-07-2005
A quarter of a million of drivers are not fully covered for EU trips a report by the AA shows. Research by the car insurance company shows that a quarter of a million drivers will take to the European roads this holiday, unaware that they are not fully insured. Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance said: "Insurers are legally obliged to provide at least third party cover for EU member states. But although you might have comprehensive cover in the UK, you shouldnt assume that the same applies for journeys across the channel." The company believe a third of all drivers do not have comprehensive insurance that will automatically cover them in EU countries, and up to a third of them wont think to call their insurer to extend their comprehensive cover for a cross-channel trip, especially if it is only for two or three days. Because the third-party part of an insurance policy automatically includes Europe, the International Insurance Certificate (Green Card) is no longer necessary in EU countries. "I think that has led many people to believe their comprehensive insurance covers them, too," said Mr Sinclair. The company also reminds drivers to take their insurance documents with them on holiday. Insurers should be able to send customers a translated insurance certificate to help overcome language barriers, should the police need to see them.
