Police act on uninsured motorists
Posted :26-08-2005
It has been revealed that the police are taking aggressive action on the issue of uninsured drivers. Following the implementation of new camera technology at the start of August, the police have moved quickly to crack down on uninsured motorists and are using new legal powers to impound vehicles. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software reads the registration plate of passing vehicles and then immediately links the information to the police national computer, giving police up-to-the-minute information on the status of a vehicle. If no information is returned by the technology, the car can be stopped by police, and if no insurance documents are produced, then the police are able to impound the vehicle on the spot. Therefore, drivers are being urged to ensure that they carry their insurance details with them, as the government continues its drive to tackle the problem of uninsured drivers. "We will not take any excuses or make any exceptions - if you don't obey the law we'll make sure that you, not the law-abiding motorist, pay the price," said police spokesman, chief inspector Nigel Brown.
