Midday danger spot for drivers
Posted :02-09-2005
Lunchtime is the most dangerous time to be on the roads motor insurance research has shown. According to data from previous years, between midday and 1pm is the most dangerous hour to be on the roads, and it's getting worse. During the first seven month of 2005, almost ten per cent (9.17 per cent) of all crashes happened at midday, compared to 8.45 per cent in 2002. The morning rush hour between 8am and 9am is the second most dangerous time to be on the road, whilst the safest time zone is in the middle of the night, after 3am. Drivers may be surprised to find that they were more likely to have a crash in morning traffic than they were during the evening rush hour. The most dangerous months for a crash are January February and March, followed by the winter months. Motor Insurance spokesman Mr Rankin was at a loss to explain why midday should be the most dangerous time: "Perhaps motorists are trying to do too much over an early lunch hour and not paying attention as a result," he told Fleet NewsNet. "Lunchtime accidents are more likely to occur during the spring and summer months when our roads are enjoying their best visibility, perhaps it is a case that excellent driving conditions lead to a certain complacency or lack of care," he added.
