Water is the new petrol for Russian scientists
Posted :22-09-2005
Concern over oil prices might be a thing of the past, as Russian scientists say they have developed an engine that can run on good old H2O. As Hurricane Rita threatens to follow in the path of Katrina and wreak havoc along the Gulf Coast, oil prices have risen dramatically and petrol pumps have been working non-stop as British motorists panic-buy their petrol. Now, however, scientists based in the UK have announced they are working on an engine that will run on water and only use a small amount of petrol, and say it could vastly reduce carbon emissions. The new engine works by extracting hydrogen from the water, and mixing it with conventional petrol as fuel. Commercial trials of the engine are expected in a year's time, though if successful, the new motor could revolutionise car manufacture. Dr Fulcieri Maltini, an energy consultant, told the Independent that "it's a completely novel way to produce hydrogen." As petrol prices approach the £1-a-litre mark, the new engine is great news for British motorists. As well as saving money on their motor insurance, car owners are looking forward to the potential savings the engine can offer, both for their wallets and for the environment.
