Older drivers to search for best car insurance deals
Posted :06-10-2005
SAGA's call to raise car insurance premiums for younger drivers, after complaining that under-50s commit more uninsured driving offences, has been rejected by the British Insurance Broker's Association (BIBA). Although BIBA fully backs the government's initiative to crack down on uninsured drivers, it claims honest young motorists should no more be penalised than over 50-year-olds. Uninsured drivers add approximately £30 per year to law-abiding drivers' insurance premiums an extra expense SAGA argued should be spread proportionally between those above and below 50. However, BIBA does not believe this is an effective course of action. "While we entirely agree that is unfair for honest motorists to be penalised with higher car insurance premiums, we do not believe that any single group in society can be singled out to take a higher share of this burden than others," said Graeme Trudgill, technical service manager at BIBA. The real problem is the lack of choice in the car insurance market for the over 65s, he claimed. "As people live longer now, the number of drivers aged over 65 will increase but many insurers are reluctant to cover them," added Mr Trudgill. "However, going to a broker can save older motorists both time and money in that they can provide clients with advice on how to reduce their premiums and also identify those insurers who are happy to cover older motorists."
