'Dangerous' OAPs claim cheapest car insurance
Posted :27-10-2005
Although statistically older drivers are safer on the road and have cheaper motor insurance police in Torquay have urged senior citizens to use public transport instead of driving after a spate of accidents were linked to OAPs. SAGA Motor Insurance claims that the police suggestion was "unfair" and pointed out that drivers over 50 were proven to be better drivers. "We believe it is unfair of officials in Torquay to suggest that older drivers give up their car keys and resort to public transport," said Paul Green, communications manager at SAGA. "Older drivers are statistically proven to be better drivers, in fact drivers under 50 are 31 per cent more likely to make a motor insurance claim," he added. The claim comes as an 89-year-old motorist recently caused chaos by driving the wrong way up a dual carriageway in Norfolk. Raymond Roberts even managed to overtake a police car sent to pull him over. After holding a clean driving licence for 53 years, Mr Roberts was fined £300 and banned from driving for one year. However, the pensioner has since announced he has no intention of driving again.
