Women pay more for cars, less for car insurance
Posted :01-12-2005
Women are being 'fleeced' when buying a new car at dealerships, according to a new survey. Simply being female means women can be quoted a significantly different sum for a new car at a showroom than men or couples, according to car-buying website Ask A Price. However, despite losing out on the forecourt, women are far better off when it comes to car insurance. Most insurance companies are happy to offer women a much cheaper premium than men, as female drivers are statistically proven to be safer drivers. Recently, several female-only motor insurance firms have been launched, catering only for women drivers and offering cheaper deals as a result. This can often 'refund' the money lost by women who are quoted a more expensive price at a car dealership. However, this trend seems to be limited only to the UK, as Norwegian anti-gender discrimination laws prevent women obtaining cheaper insurance. "We note that the government rather wants politically correct than fair insurance premiums," a spokesman for a Norwegian insurance company told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.
