Motorists warned over car park dangers
Posted :15-12-2005
The threat of theft and damage to cars left in car parks has been highlighted by a new study. According to a report from a committee of MPs, as much as 20 per cent of all car crime occurs in car parks, with hospital and railway stations particular hotspots for vehicle theft and damage. The news highlights the importance for motorists to ensure that they have adequate car insurance to cover all eventualities, especially for commuters who often leave their vehicles parked at a train station all day. MPs on the committee have demanded that local councils do more to prevent vehicle theft by improving the standard of car park surveillance and to establish more secure car parks. Committee chairman Edward Leigh told the BBC: "About a fifth of all car crime happens in car parks so it is very disappointing that only a small proportion of public bodies across the country have managed to establish secure car parks." The Home Office is looking to tackle the issue through working with local authorities and insurance providers and aims to cut vehicle crime by 30 per cent over the next 12 months.
