Technology to reduce car insurance premiums
Posted :21-02-2006
A new gadget is expected to have an effect on car insurance premiums by vastly improving parallel parking. The computerised device guides drivers into parking spaces and should make the parallel parking of even the most nervous drivers more accurate, Scotland on Sunday reports. The in-car system uses scanners, sonar and cameras around the car to calculate the best path to follow when manoeuvring into a space. Created by Japanese electronics firm Denso, the computer system guides drivers into tight parking spots via an onscreen display. A prototype, developed by the company, has been submitted for a UK patent and Denso is seeking a distribution deal with manufacturers in Britain. Similar 'hands-free' parking systems are in development by a number of leading electronics firm, giving motorists hope that computerised parking devices will drive down car insurance premiums by reducing the number of bumps that occur during complicated manoeuvres. Eddie Barnaville, general manager of the Driving Instructors Association, commented: "Cars are generally safer than they have ever been, but many people find the spatial awareness needed to carry out manoeuvres such as parallel parking difficult to adjust to."
