Protect winter NCD for lower car insurance premiums
Posted :07-04-2006
With the vast majority of accidents occurring during the cold weather and an associated rise in car insurance premiums as a result, British motorists are being encouraged to protect their no claims discount (NCD) as the wintery weather is forecast to continue into April. The number of car insurance claims rose in March 2006 compared to the previous year, and with wet weather expected to continue into April, drivers looking to save money should start by protecting their NCD. According to research from esure.com, 'safe' drivers with more than four years no claims bonus could benefit from savings worth £10.5 billion a year, a saving well worth protecting. Mike Pickard, head of Risk and Underwriting at esure.com, said: "Opting for a protected no claim discount is well worth a relatively small addition to drivers' yearly premiums. "The no claim discount is such a valuable potential saving for motorists and can lead to differences of more than £700 per year in the premiums for the same car, with the same driver in the same street. "It can be lost in an instant if a claim is made - which is more likely during periods of poor weather when driving conditions can be difficult. There is no quick fix or fast way to make it up again. It's slowly earned again by remaining claim-free over time. If the weather continues to be wintry in April as predicted, drivers should consider taking the opportunity to protect their no claim discount in case the unavoidable happened." Sadly thousands of British motorists will not protect their NCD, preferring to enjoy the minutely cheaper car insurance premiums. However, while these drivers may think they are saving money, the first accident they have will see their future premiums rocket to painful levels.
