New roads increase car insurance need
Posted :25-04-2006
Potholes and cracked roads may be a common excuse when explaining away a crash, but new research has revealed that in fact the opposite may be true. A new survey from the Department for Transport (DfT) has claimed that while roads are improving all the time, these improvements are causing problems all of their own. The DfT found that almost 20 per cent of all roads in the UK fell below its "anti skid" level of satisfaction, endangering motorists, increasing the number of accidents and raising car insurance premiums as a result. In London some ten per cent of roads were found to be prone to skidding, rising to a quarter of roads in some provincial cities. Another survey from the DfT supported these findings, showing that 85 per cent of English councils felt that poor roads were jeopardising motorists' safety. These findings underline how crucial it is for drivers to take out adequate car insurance. Even motorists who consider themselves good drivers can not afford to be complacent, as bad conditions can be just as expensive for experienced drivers as it is for new ones. Meanwhile, according to Auto Trader, "tough upcoming spending rounds could undermine the recent good work", increasing still further the associated risks of poor road surfaces.
