Green drivers set for cheaper car insurance
Posted :04-05-2006
Motor insurance providers are believed to be looking at introducing discounts to encourage the use of hybrid eco-friendly cars. In a survey, car insurance giant More Than found that as many as one in six British motorists would consider converting to a petrol-electric hybrid car, which are proven to cut greenhouse gas emissions by lowering fuel consumption. Although as yet there is little in terms of financial incentive for divers to convert to a hybrid, petrol-electric cars are improving in both popularity and performance. Indeed the Honda Civic Hybrid picked up the World Green Car 2006 award at the World Car of the Year Awards in Manhattan. But in addition to lower fuel costs, More Than motor insurance manager Keith Maxwell said that some car insurance providers were looking at introducing incentives for people to convert to more economically friendly cars. Mr Maxwell said: "At the moment insurance policies for hybrid cars and for petrol cars are the same [but] we are looking at how we could reward people who choose an eco-friendly car, in terms of insurance." Mr Maxwell's comments come weeks after Gordon Brown introduced tax breaks for owners of hybrid cars in the latest bid to encourage more widespread adoption of hybrid technology.
