Protect in-car gadgets with car insurance
Posted :17-05-2006
With new cars increasingly featuring satellite navigation devices, owners are being encouraged to make sure their gadgets are insured or face the extortionate cost of replacement. British consumers now spend some £305 million on satellite navigation systems, reflecting 510 per cent growth since 2003, according to market research firm Mintel. However, it is not just sales of in-car gadgets that are rocketing, but theft of them as well. Satellite navigation systems are compact enough to make them easy to steal, while being sufficiently expensive to make their theft worthwhile. Drivers can mitigate the effects of any theft by insuring such gadgets on their car insurance policy. Then even if the car or the sat-nav is stolen owners will not have to shell out for the cost of replacement themselves. Meanwhile, a previous study claimed that satellite navigation systems actually increase car insurance premiums. A survey conducted by YouGov for Privilege Insurance, found that in-car satellite navigation equipment can raise the likelihood of an accident as drivers fiddle with the controls rather than watch the road.
