Brits venture abroad without motor insurance
Posted :31-05-2006
Almost half of British motorists break driving laws while in Europe and half don't bother to check their driving insurance before hitting the road in foreign countries, new research has found. A poll performed by insurance company esure found that 46 per cent of motorists break European driving regulations and that half don't think that they have driving insurance that covers them abroad, but don't bother to get it changed, before setting off. The poll also found that six per cent of drivers assume that their travel insurance covers their car while abroad which is never the case. Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "It is crucial for motorists who intend to take their cars to Europe to call their insurer and tell them that they want to extend the level of cover they have for driving abroad. "It is also vital that motorists understand the basic rules and regulations for driving on foreign roads and be fully prepared by planning their journeys, carrying the essential equipment and giving their car a maintenance check before setting off." It is illegal for Britons to drive in Europe without displaying a GB sticker on their vehicle as well as a warning triangle.
