Almost half want elderly banned from roads
Posted :26-07-2006
A full 49 per cent of motorists have said that elderly drivers should be banned from the roads during peak hours to cut down on congestion, a recent survey found.
New government figures have shown that 90 per cent of motorists think congestion is a problem and a recent survey by insurance broker motorinsurance.co.uk found that ridding roads of the elderly was a solution favoured by many.
Furthermore, 62 per cent of the 300 drivers polled by the insurance website believed that elderly drivers cannot cope with the contemporary road environment.
Paul Cosh, the managing director of www.motorinsurance.co.uk, said: "The impact of congestion on the UK economy in terms of lost time, fuel costs and general stress runs to billions, yet we continue to drive our cars more and drive further than the rest of Europe."
"However, I do not think that picking on this nation's most careful and experienced drivers is really the answer."
Older drivers being dangerous on the roads is an unfounded stereotype, added Mr Cosh.
A recent survey found that those born under the star sign of Aries make the worst drivers, while the best motorists are usually Sagittarians.
