Half of British motorists drunk
Posted :01-08-2006
Half of the UK's motorists have admitted that they have drunk before getting behind the wheel, according to a new survey.
Around Christmas is the traditional time of police crackdowns on drunk driving, but the summer months can be equally as bad, according to the Institure of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Recently, London experienced an all time high in drunk driving arrests, due to the combination of the summer weather and the recent World Cup.
The IAM states: "Part of the summer problem with drink driving may be aggravated by dehydration. That’s another good reason to stick to water if you are driving home.
"Don't hesitate to nominate yourself as the "designated" driver – you will immediately be popular with your fellow pub-goers!"
Drivers should also hesitate before getting behind the wheel, even if they have slept between drinking and driving, as alcohol may still be in their system.
The Association of British Insurers warns that even a single drunk driving conviction can cause car insurance premiums to rise.
