DIA calls for driving test reform
Posted :02-08-2006
The assessment and execution of driving tests in the UK must be reformed, according to the Driving Instructors Association.
In tests lasting as little as 40 minutes, often less than six miles are covered, the DIA has said.
The DIA has said that a large amount of time during the test is spent covering just two manoeuvres.
DIA general manager Eddie Barnaville said: "A modern approach to driving needs to be adopted. And we need to look at lengthening the test and incorporating a compulsory log book system so that driving instructors can assess their candidates' competence in mechanical skills and manoeuvring leaving more time for learners to demonstrate their eye and brain skills in their test.
"If we are to reduce road casualties we must invest in the future of new drivers."
Driving dangerously or incompetently can result in convictions, which can cause a rise in motor insurance premiums, according to the Association of British Insurers.
Over two thirds of motorists believe that the speed limit in rural areas should be slashed to 40 mph, a recent survey by Direct Line motor insurance has found.
