Drivers using mobiles warned
Posted :04-08-2006
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched a campaign to stop drivers from talking on mobile phones while behind the wheel.
According to the GMP, even those using a hands-free device while chatting are endangering themselves and those around them.
Talking on a mobile phone while driving is more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk, research has found.
GMP's chief inspector Haydn Roberts, said: "The offence of using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving is still being committed by too many motorists.
"The vast majority of drivers adhere to the law, and it is those drivers that quite rightly complain about the few who will insist on using their phone whilst driving their vehicle."
The chief inspector added that those driving and using mobile phones endanger not only themselves, but those around them.
Tips such as taking a break when tired are ignored by most UK drivers, a recent survey from NatWest has found.
