British motorists in need of a chill pill
Posted :07-08-2006
Britons on the road are the most uptight drivers in Europe, a new survey has discovered.
The most relaxed drivers on the continent are the Belgians, with only slightly more than half admitting to have gotten annoyed at one point or another.
In comparison, 87 per cent of Brits admit to having been annoyed by other drivers.
RAC Foundation executive director Edmund King, said: "High holiday spirits and poor local knowledge can turn a drive to the beach into a trip to A&E.
"British motorists driving abroad need to expect the unexpected at all times if they want to bring home holiday photos rather than X-rays."
The survey was carried out by the RAC, who talked to 13,000 drivers in 23 European countries.
It was the Germans who were found most likely to react angrily by tailgating an offending driver while flashing their lights at them.
Almost 300,000 drivers were the casualties of road accidents in 2003, according to the Department for Transport.
