Tire slasher sympathised with by Brake
Posted :17-08-2006
While it sympathises with their motives, road safety charity Brake has said it cannot condone the actions of a mysterious tire slasher.
A string of tire slashings has been carried out in Hampshire, with apparent motive of punishing motorists who talk on their mobile phones while driving.
At each scene, a message is left by the "mobile slasher" which reads: "Warning. You have been seen driving while using your mobile phone."
Cathy Keeler, Brake spokeswoman told BBC One's Six O' Clock News : "Obviously Brake does not condone vigilantism, far from it. In fact slashed tyres can be a hazard on the roads as well.
"But we can fully understand the frustrations of people who see others driving along using their mobile phones all the time when it is such a danger on the roads."
Drivers who are caught using their mobile phones while on the road will be subject to a sizable fine and their motor insurance premiums will go up.
