Costs of running a car to rise
Posted :30-08-2006
Variable costs of running a car are set to rise drastically and will soon supercede fixed costs such as motor insurance and road tax, according to Autocar magazine.
Costs like motorway tolls and congestion charges in certain areas are to skyrocket, the magazine has forecast.
On average, a motorist will end up spending £1,000 a year on road tolls, while drivers who clock up 30,000 miles a year will pay triple this.
Chas Hallet, editor of Autocar said: "It is going to be a lot more costly for car drivers over the coming decade.
"It is right that polluting cars should pay a penalty but the government should rethink its road tolling proposals immediately, or a lot of motorists on average incomes are going to be priced out of their cars."
A driver operating a Ford Focus 1.6 and driving an average of 15,000 miles will rise by 30 pence per mile, according to data from Autocar and the AA.
Those who shop around and compare prices can usually save money on the insurance part of running a car, according to motor insurance news site motorinsurance.co.uk.
