Many parents clueless on new car seat laws
Posted :08-09-2006
The majority of parents who drive with their children in the car are ignorant about the new laws concerning child car seats, which will come into effect on September 18th, according to Churchill Insurance.
Two thirds of parents mistakenly believe that all children aged seven or above do not need car seats, when the new law states that car seats are mandatory for children up to the age of 12.
The new law states that from September 18th, all children under the height of 1m 35 cm must travel in a car seat.
Frances Browning, a spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance said: "Our research highlights a worrying lack of awareness around child safety in cars.
"However, we hope that the law new will mean that parents become more conscious about safety in the car."
Ms Browning continued that any new law that makes travelling in cars safer for children can only be a positive thing.
Buying a second-hand car seat is advised against by the The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, as it is almost impossible to know its history and whether it has been damaged in accidents.
