Don't leave car insurance documents in your vehicle
Posted :16-10-2006
Documents such as a vehicle registration or car insurance certificates should never be left in the car, warns Post Office Car Insurance.
According to new research from the insurance provider, around 25 million drivers leave some £3.3 billion worth of valuables in their cars that could be stolen by thieves.
It was found that on average, motorists leave £134 worth of goods unattended, while 18 per cent leave valuables worth over £200 or more.
Post Office Car Insurance warned drivers never to leave important documents in the car and to make sure they have adequate insurance in case their car is stolen.
"Our advice to motorists is to only leave valuable items in the car if it's absolutely necessary and, if they do, to make sure the items are hidden in the boot or at least out of sight of potential thieves," said Clare Oldstein, head of communications for Post Office Car Insurance.
The most common items left in cars were found to be CDs, coats, shoes, stereos and tool kits. In addition, the research discovered that goods such as bowling balls and air fresheners have been stolen in the past.
Under UK law, all drivers must have a valid motor insurance certificate and must make sure they have adequate cover before driving any vehicle.
