Speed Awareness Scheme to educate drivers
Posted :17-10-2006
Drivers in Humberside who break the speed limit and risk paying higher car insurance premiums could benefit from an initiative which aims to educate speeding motorists.
The Speed Awareness Scheme is to be offered instead of a fixed penalty notice to all drivers committing an eligible offence. Pilot studies across the UK have shown that the course has been successful in deterring those caught from re-offending.
The project, which has been running since April 2006, is a joint venture between Humberside Police and Northgate Information Systems which intends to improve the system by enabling responses and attendance records of all those attending the course to be logged.
If the driver fails to respond to a course offer or attend the sessions, the original fixed penalty will be applied.
"This upgrade to our systems will enable us to process information more efficiently and continue to help us educate speeding motorists," said Tracey Windas, central ticket officer at Humberside Police.
In addition, Dave Meaden, managing director of Northgate Public Services, agrees that education is "critical to tackling attitudes to speeding and to cutting the number of offenders who are endangering public safety by driving too fast".
The standard punishment for driving above the speed limit is currently three penalty points and a fine of up to £1,000.
