Younger drivers could cut car insurance price
Posted :07-11-2006
A scheme which aims to discourage drivers aged 18 to 25 taking to the roads at night could offer up to a 40 per cent discount on car insurance policies.
It follows the main theme of Road Safety Week 2006, which runs from November 6th to 12th 2006. The focus this year is the prevention of accidents involving younger drivers.
The DriveTime initiative from More Than offers discounts if the driver agrees not to get behind the wheel between 23:00-06:00 GMT, using an in-car global positioning system to find out if they do.
However, if the driver breaks the rule, their car insurance provider automatically fines them £25.
"We welcome the DriveTime scheme as an excellent first step towards reducing the exposure of young drivers to driving at particularly risky times of day," said Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, a road safety charity.
DriveTime was developed after research from More Than found that between the hours specified by the scheme, 40 per cent of accidents which involve young drivers cause death or serious injury, compared to 20 per cent at other times.
Road Safety Week aims to raise awareness and offer advice to younger motorists as, according to Brake, they are at a "much higher risk" of having a crash than older drivers.
