Almost half think driving age 'should be 18'
Posted :28-11-2006
Some 43 per cent of motorists believe that the legal age for driving should be raised to 18.
The figure is part of research from Tesco Car Insurance, which found that 22 per cent of those who thought the age should change believed it should be increased to 21 years old.
It was also discovered that 72 per cent of motorists believe that they do not have the option of using public transport and 73 per cent are unaware as to how polluting their car is.
And when it comes to road safety - one of the many issues that could affect car insurance claims - 35 per cent said they wanted to see high-profile police patrols in areas known to have a high accident risk.
"Our findings reveal a sizeable majority of motorists feel unprotected on the roads," said head of Tesco Car Insurance Allan Burns.
In addition, the survey revealed that drink or drug-influenced driving is considered the chief danger to road safety.
Car insurance premiums are based on a number of factors including the make and model of the car and whether the driver has any prior motoring convictions.
