New initiative aims to cut car crime
Posted :30-11-2006
A campaign is being launched at a hospital in Bradford, aimed at cutting car crime which could lead to costly motor insurance claims.
The past few months have seen a "slight" increase in car-related crime at the Bradford Royal Infirmary car park, according to crime reduction officer John Moore.
And the new initiative, funded by Bradford's Safer Cities Partnership (SCP), involves a number of ways in which to educate motorists and raise safety awareness to help ensure that would-be criminals stay away.
These include messages on the back of car parking tickets, posters, leaflets and stickers which drivers can put on their cars informing a potential thief that all valuables have been removed from the vehicle.
In addition, motorists are being advised to hide all valuables and other items from view while their car is unattended.
"If we can just remind people to be on their guard and not invite temptation then we can help prevent the public becoming victims of crime," said councilor Kris Hopkins, co-chair of the SCP.
"Particularly at a time when they are hospital visiting and their minds can be on other things," he added.
Vandalism and theft from or of a vehicle could result in the owner having to make a claim on their motor insurance, which traditionally causes premiums to increase.
