New road safety campaign launched
Posted :05-12-2006
An increase in car insurance premiums has been cited in a new campaign as one of ten reasons why Christmas revellers should not drink and drive.
Suffolk County Council has launched the Whose bed will you end up in? campaign to alert motorists to the inherent dangers of drink-driving.
According to Suffolk police, 139 out of 2161 breath tests showing drivers over the legal limit were recorded last Christmas, which chief inspector Barnes-Smith says is "139 too many".
"If you drink and drive, you're taking the risk of potentially losing your licence…or your life," he added.
In addition, drivers are being warned that if they drink over the legal driving limit, they could still be over this limit the following day as the alcohol may still continue to be in their system.
Other reasons listed by the campaign not to drink and drive include a fine of up to £5,000, potential loss of employment, risk of an accident and the possibility of personal injury.
A useful idea this Christmas could be to agree a designated driver within a group of friends, which could help to avoid accidents and potentially costly car insurance claims.
