Three quarters bump car while parking, says insurer
Posted :12-12-2006
Some 73 per cent of motorists admit to bumping or scraping their vehicle in a supermarket or shopping centre car park, it has been found.
According to swiftcover.com, which provides online car insurance, Christmas does nothing to help motorists prevent car park accidents, with 65 per cent saying that the busy period causes extra stress while parking.
However, 53 per cent admitted that although they had returned from shopping to find their car had been scraped or bumped by another, they considered the damage too small to necessitate in a car insurance claim.
Swiftcover.com claims that although this may seem logical, any damage can reduce the value of a vehicle and it is therefore worthwhile to make a claim - as this also means the responsibility of arranging repairs is taken from the owner's hands.
"It is staggering how many people have had their car bumped or scraped while it has been parked," remarked Craig Staniland, underwriting director at the insurance firm.
"With the added stress levels of fighting other frantic shoppers for limited parking spaces during the festive period, we're advising drivers to take a deep breath and chill out a little," he continued.
Swiftcover.com is an online insurance provider, offering motor insurance, pet insurance and travel cover.
