Pre-plan Christmas journeys, says map company
Posted :13-12-2006
Motorists are being advised to pre-plan any journeys they may make over the festive season to avoid getting lost or causing damage to their car over unknown terrain.
Map24, an internet-based mapping service, recommends that drivers always pay very close attention to road signs even when using a satellite navigation system (satnav).
Although satnavs can be an effective method of getting from a to b, there have been instances where motorists have been guided onto closed roads or unstable ground.
Consequently, Map24 is advising those behind the wheel this Christmas to also pay attention to radio traffic updates and leave extra time for journeys.
"This year has seen an upsurge in sales of satnav systems," said Chris Wallett, Map24's managing director.
"Most people use them wisely and safely but there are too many incidents of drivers relying far too much on their systems."
Recent research found that 260,000 satnavs were stolen from vehicles in 2005, often to be resold on the black market.
