Drop in drink-driving level proposed
Posted :18-12-2006
Those looking for car insurance in Ireland are being alerted to news which could see a possible cut in the drink-driving limit.
Currently, a motorist is classed as over the legal limit when there is more than 80 mg of alcohol measured in 100 ml of blood.
However, a new safety strategy could see the permitted levels be cut to 20 mg, representing a 75 per cent reduction in the amount of alcohol allowed.
Although the new regulations would have to be approved by government before taking effect, they could mean that motorists who have one drink would be breaking the law should they get behind the wheel.
According to the Highway Code, some of the many dangers of drink-driving include impaired ability to judge distance and speed, a false sense of confidence and reduced coordination.
Road safety organisation Think! recommends that people who drink on an evening should be aware that their may still be illegal levels of alcohol in their blood the day after.
