Camera technology 'could improve road safety'
Posted :04-01-2007
Camera-based sensing technology could be used in vehicles to assist in the prevention of accidents and improve road safety, it has been claimed.
Drivers who crash or bump another car and consequently have to make a motor insurance claim could benefit from new devices currently in development.
Automotive cameras could provide a viable approach to detecting obstacles, which may help motorists perform driving tasks such as reverse parking or navigating through dark country roads.
A study by ABI research found that many car manufacturers are considering the new technology.
"The long-term future for automotive cameras is very positive," said senior analyst, David Alexander.
"[They] will help improve road safety for everyone," he added.
Currently, models such as the Range Rover Vogue can be equipped with a camera system, which is attached to the back of the car and gives the driver a view of obstacles behind them.
Some vehicles are also equipped with a warning tone, aimed at alerting the driver when an obstacle is in close proximity.
