Scrap speed cameras, says campaigner
Posted :17-01-2007
The founder of a national road safety group is calling for all speed cameras to be removed, it has emerged.
Paul Smith, who established Safe Speed, says that there are many side effects resulting from the cameras, such as drivers becoming so distracted at trying to slow down that they actually crash.
This, he maintains, could have potentially dangerous repercussions and may result in the driver having to make a motor insurance claim.
Mr Smith states that Safe Speed is concerned about the reduction in driving quality that may be caused by the monitoring devices.
"Speed cameras are simply a distraction from real road safety," he continued. "We won't get road safety back on track until we scrap the lot."
If caught driving above the speed limit or through a red traffic light by a camera, the motorist is sent a notice of intended prosecution.
At present, the minimum fine is £60 and three penalty points being added to a licence.
