Guernsey drink-driving figures down
Posted :02-02-2007
The number of drivers convicted of drink-driving on the channel island of Guernsey has fallen, according to the police.
In 2006 180 drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and 146 were eventually charged, reports the Guernsey Press and Star.
This was a full 18 per cent drop on the figures from 2005, yet Guernsey Police have warned against complacency.
"The trend is encouraging but we should not become complacent by the size of the percentage drop of the last 12 months," said police head of operations Superintendent Ian Morellec.
"Crude analysis of those arrests that did not progress to prosecution suggests that in each case, the motorists were only one alcoholic drink away from jeopardising their driving licence."
These drivers should take their experience as a warning and be more careful in the future, added Superintendent Morellec.
During the last three festive seasons Guernsey Police have launched high-profile anti drink-driving campaigns.
Some 3,201 people were killed on the roads in 2005, according to the Department for Transport.
