MPVs and 4x4s are safer, says report
Posted :06-02-2007
Those who own four-wheel drive (4x4) and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) are less likely to crash or be injured in an accident, a new report claims.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), motorists behind the wheel of 4x4s and MPVs are five times less likely to hit a safety or crash barrier, which could then lead to a car insurance claim.
In addition, people travelling in the aforementioned vehicles have a lesser chance of being killed or seriously injured in an accident than in any other type of car.
And the SMMT is partly attributing these findings to the installation of certain systems in 4x4s and MPVs, such as an Electronic Stability Programme, anti-rollover technology and certain other safety features.
By giving power from the engine to all four wheels simultaneously, 4x4 vehicles may often provide better control for the driver, with examples such as the Range Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser.
Security or stabilisation technology in a vehicle may be a factor considered by car insurance companies when calculating premiums.
