Highways Agency: Beware of driving in bad weather
Posted :07-02-2007
The Highways Agency has issued a warning to drivers regarding the heavy snow and freezing weather conditions that are forecast to affect parts of the UK this week.
Snow and ice on the roads may increase the chances of skidding or damaging a vehicle, as it is harder to control and requires longer stopping distances and gentler turning than in normal conditions.
Drivers are being advised to check in advance of a journey if the weather is expected to be particularly severe and take extra precautions if this is the case.
In addition, those venturing out on the roads are reminded by the Highways Agency to be careful when driving near or overtaking salt spreading vehicles.
Using the highest gear possible may help drivers avoid wheel spin, while the avoidance of sudden braking may help to reduce the chances of skidding and potentially causing an accident, which could result in a car insurance claim.
