Inform car insurance company 'if you have points'
Posted :22-02-2007
Drivers who incur penalty points on their licence should inform their car insurance company as soon as possible, it is suggested.
In order to comply with the Ongoing Duty of Disclosure section of a policy, British motorists should notify their insurer, no matter what the points were given for, according to a car insurance expert.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI), says that although "three points is three points", the penalty may not cause a driver's premiums to increase.
According to Mr Tarling, the car insurance company will often ask what the points were for - and depending on the provider, points for speeding may "not necessarily" push the cover price up.
However, the ABI adds that being caught using a hand-held mobile phone can incur points and a fine, and could increase insurance premiums if it coincides with an offence such as reckless or dangerous driving.
