Safety campaign finds over 2,000 lawbreakers
Posted :08-05-2007
A road safety campaign aimed at reinforcing the illegality of talking on a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt while driving found over 2,000 people ignoring such laws, it emerged today.
Throughout March 2007, Merseyside police issued 900 fixed-penalty notices for phone usage and 1,221 notices for flouting seatbelt rules, with both offences putting lives at risk, it was claimed.
Chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe said offences such as these not only risk drivers' lives but those of other motorists and road users.
"Many of you are still ignoring warnings about the increased dangers of driving while using a mobile phone," he continued. "Please stop phoning and driving."
Mr Hogan-Howe also cited research statistics which found a four-fold increase in the likelihood of crashing if a mobile phone is being used behind the wheel.
Getting caught on the phone when driving can result in a fine and three penalty points, which may cause car insurance premiums to rise.
