Those without car insurance 'increase costs for honest consumers'
Posted :21-05-2007
The number of untaxed vehicles driving on UK roads has soared by 76 per cent in just two years, new figures show.
As a result, honest consumers are being forced to pay more for insurance because of a steep rise in the number of uninsured drivers on British roads.
According to a new poll by American Express, motorists would like to see more severe penalties for uninsured drivers, who now account for around one in 20 cars on the roads.
The survey of 10,000 people found that the majority would increase police patrols, boost public transport to reduce traffic and put more severe penalties in place for uninsured, unlicensed, untaxed motorists if they were prime minister for a day.
British drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated about the number of people getting behind the wheel without tax, insurance or a driving licence.
Joanne Field, American Express Motor Insurance marketing manager, said: "The uninsured driver poses a risk to every insured driver - not only is there the extra premium cost, but there is the risk of being involved in an accident with them."
Cheap car insurance can still be found by shopping around for the best possible deal and drivers are advised to compare car insurance premiums to ensure they are not paying more than they need to for cover.
