Drivers 'confused' about mobile phone law
Posted :23-05-2007
UK drivers are not clear on the rules about using a mobile phone while behind the wheel, according to a consumer guide.
A survey by Which? found that one in ten motorists knew they could call 999 or 112 in an emergency - which although is classed as using a phone while driving, is not illegal.
However, the research also discovered that 90 per cent of drivers were aware of the revised penalties for being caught using a handheld phone at the wheel, which increased to a £60 fine and three penalty points this year.
"Although people seem to be aware of the higher penalties for mobile phone use behind the wheel, many either don’t understand or don't obey the revised law," remarked Richard Headland, motoring editor at Which?.
Penalty points - which can also be given for offences such as speeding or jumping a red light - added to a driver's record can often cause car insurance premiums to rise.
