Point swapping on joint car insurance 'is illegal'
Posted :31-05-2007
Those with joint car insurance policies are being warned that swapping penalty points with their partner is highly illegal, after new research discovered that 495,000 drivers have done so previously.
Swapping points, which can involve one driver being awarded the penalty for an offence committed by their partner, is a practice 9.5 million people said they would do if it would avoid being banned from the roads.
The survey, conducted by Churchill, found that while 88 per cent of respondents knew the process was illegal, ten per cent believe it is acceptable for those with a shared car insurance policy.
"Trying to escape convictions by swapping points with another person is highly illegal and can lead to prosecution," said Frances Browning, a spokesperson for Churchill. "The way to avoid a speeding ban in the first place is simple - drive responsibly."
Points can often be given to motorists who are caught jumping red lights, speeding and using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel, among other offences.
