Third party car insurance 'not always cheapest'

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT) car insurance may not be the cheapest option for some drivers, according to new research.

Figures from insurance comparison firm Insurancewide.com suggests that fully comprehensive car insurance can cost up to £200 less than TPFT cover.

While TPFT car insurance premiums are between £500 and £700, fully comprehensive protection is priced at £400 to £500, the firm claims.

Chief executive James Harrison said that by "doing your homework", drivers can potentially save "hundreds of pounds" each year.

"Our research shows that people who perhaps don't use their cars much or who lock them up safely are still opting for third party fire and theft cover when in fact they could pay less and be more protected with fully comprehensive policy," he added.

Meanwhile, Churchill recently reminded drivers that point swapping is illegal.

The firm issued the advice after it found that ten per cent of drivers believe the practice is acceptable for those drivers with a joint car insurance policy.
