A quarter of car crashes 'due to lack of skills'
Posted :06-06-2007
Almost one-quarter of those who have passed their driving test in the past two years say they have crashed due to a lack of skills, it emerged today, in news which could be of interest to people needing car insurance.
The research from Direct Line also found that another 17 per cent of newer motorists said they had experienced a "near miss" because the test did not prepare them adequately for unsupervised driving.
And instructors appeared to agree with newly-qualified motorists, as 75 per cent expressed "serious concerns" about the standard of current driving tests.
Emma Holyer, a spokesperson for the car insurance provider, said it was now urging the Driving Standards Agency to revise and improve the practical assessment.
"[The] study has revealed the extent to which people feel the driving test has under-prepared them for the roads," she concluded.
In addition to a theory test, drivers may be required to undertake a number of separate manoeuvres during the practical exam, including parallel parking and an emergency stop.
