Scottish drivers 'slowing down'

Posted :26-06-2007

Drivers north of the border are reducing their speed on the road, it has been reported.

According to the publisher of the Phillips Road Atlas Show, the number of £60 fines and penalty point deductions distributed by authorities in the area dropped 21 per cent during 2005 to 2006.

The good news continues for the country, as the organisation added that it is now the best in the UK for speed reduction, as England and Wales recorded only three per cent falls.

These statistics may manifest themselves in car insurance prices up and down Britain.

However, the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland did not perform as well as the rest of Scotland - it recorded the highest penalty distribution of any UK region.

"It has a very low population and some very busy roads with people whizzing through," Stephen Mesquita told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland.

This comes as Department for Transport figures show that 3,150 people died on UK roads in 2006.
