Women 'are the drivers behind the popularity of convertibles'
Posted :27-06-2007
Women drivers are the main reason for the increased popularity of convertible cars over the last ten years, according to one company.
Car insurance specialist Diamond revealed that the Mazda MX-5 was the UK's most popular cabriolet up until 1999, when the Peugeot 206cc became the best seller - a position it has retained ever since.
And perhaps expectedly given the variance in weather conditions, the company found that convertibles are relatively common in the south-east, but much less so in Scotland.
Sian Lewis, managing director of Diamond, commented: "The 206cc was the car that started the craze for affordable folding hard top roofs, and its popularity has no doubt had an effect on the increase we've seen."
She added that the success of this car has seen other manufacturers follow suit with their own convertibles, with some competing to have the fastest automatic folding roof.
The Peugeot 206 is still on sale after nine years of production, although it has been superseded by the 207, which is based on the Citroen C3 platform.
