RAC: UK is car-dependent nation
Posted :16-07-2007
The UK is still a nation dependent on its automobiles, motoring group RAC has claimed, following a survey of the population's driving habits.
According to research by the RAC Foundation, the number of women and men on the roads has increased since 1993, which could be a timely reminder for both sexes to check their car insurance policies.
It was found that 72 per cent of the population held a valid driving licence in 2005, compared to 67 per cent 12 years earlier; the total number of miles clocked up by motorists across the UK has also rose by 17 per cent during this period.
The RAC Foundation's research development manager Elizabeth Dainton offered her thoughts on why the UK still seems to love getting behind the wheel and taking to the highway.
"Trying and experiencing new things is part and parcel of our everyday lives, but where transport is concerned we tend to stick with what we know", she said.
"It is clear from this research that we are still a very car-dependent nation."
Drivers who do up their annual mileage may need to inform their car insurance provider, as this factor is often taken into account when calculating premiums.
