Car insurance 'should be encouraged'
Posted :17-07-2007
Younger drivers need to be encouraged and made more aware that car insurance is there to protect them and others, it was suggested this week.
Susan Beck, head of communications for the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), said that the organisation tends to see a number of young males driving without car insurance - possibly because they see it as a big expense.
However, families and driving instructors must do what they can to encourage new drivers to buy a policy and make sure they are adequately covered.
"Insurance is not an option, it is a legal requirement and essential," she continued.
"More can be done to educate young people that insurance is not just there to protect them, but it is there to protect all of us."
Ms Beck also emphasised the potentially "dreadful" consequences of getting behind the wheel without car insurance, which can include the risk of a payout should any damage be incurred, as well as being charged with a motoring offence.
The MIB works with police and stakeholders to try and minimise the number of drivers without adequate car insurance.
