Minister explains drink-driving penalties
Posted :20-07-2007
Transport secretary Ruth Kelly has today reiterated the penalties for people who are caught drink-driving and emphasised how dangerous it can be.
In addition to putting themselves in danger, those who get behind the wheel while over the legal alcohol level are also risking others' lives - as well as facing a big car insurance bill should they damage another vehicle.
As a new anti drink-driving campaign was launched, Ms Kelly said a criminal conviction, "stiff" fine and 12-month ban were all guaranteed for people who do not obey the law.
"These will limit both your career prospects and social life," she added. "I don't think I can be any clearer."
The new campaign is titled Moment of Doubt and focuses on the shame of being caught as well as the far-reaching impacts it can have.
Drivers caught above the legal limit may find their motor insurance premiums increase dramatically and, if banned, they may have to retake their test before having their licence reinstated.
