Drivers 'prefer' satnavs
Posted :25-07-2007
Car insurance customers might not be surprised to hear that in-car navigation devices are overtaking the traditional map as the route-finding method of choice these days.
According to new research by Motorpoint, 72 per cent of motorists now prefer to leave the map reading to gadgets such as satellite navigation devices (satnavs), rather than consulting an old-fashioned atlas.
Satnavs, Motorpoint maintained, can have some positive features, such as the ability to cut down journey times and allow the motorist to focus more on the road ahead.
"We have noticed a growing number of customers who are purchasing vehicles with a satellite navigation system, as it becomes the new must-have accessory," said the company's managing director David Shelton.
Although a tempting purchase for some, drivers may want to check their car insurance to find out whether an in-car gadget would be covered should it be stolen.
Often, insurers advise satnav owners to not only hide the device from view while the car is unoccupied, but to also remove the satnav base or holder - as this could signal to an opportunistic thief that one of the potentially expensive items is hidden inside the vehicle.
